North Maluku Tourism:The Royal Palace of Ternate Sultanate

A. Brief Information

Ternate Sultanate played important roles in the development of the eastern Indonesia during the 13th to 17th centuries. In its heyday (16th Century), Ternate Sultanate‘s territories covered the entire Maluku, and other surrounding areas like North Sulawesi, the Southern Philippines, and Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean.

On December 7th, 1976, the royal palace of Ternate Sultanate got its status as National Heritage by the Indonesian Government. Since that time, all the sultanate‘s properties were handed over to the Directorate General of Culture by Sultan Muda Mudzafar Syah. Those properties are now kept and preserved based on the Indonesian regulation on historical properties.


B. Distinctive Features

Just take a look inside the palace, you will see that almost all the palace‘s interiors and properties were made of gold. There you will see a golden crown, a huge golden necklace, and some pieces of golden earring. Some other historical properties that are kept inside the palace are ancient weapons, royal dresses, household utensils, and ancient manuscripts. All the golden properties is a reason to say that Ternate Sultanate was once ever been a great Sultanate in the Malay Archipelago. The palace is a big resource of historical knowledge about the early history of the eastern Indonesia. So far, very few information disclose the fact about the sultanate of Ternate.


C. Location

The royal palace of Ternate Sultanate is located at Soa-Sio Village, Ternate Sub-district, North Maluku Province, Indonesia.


D. Access

The Royal Palace of Ternate Sultanate can be reached easily remembering its location nearby the city of Ternate. You can take any public transport, usually in the form of private car, with IDR 3.000 for its cost. In addition, TAXI service has been available in the province of North Maluku since 2005. It can be an alternative for you as well.

F. Accommodation and other Facilities

Around the royal Palace of Ternate Sultanate, there are some local peddlers offering local souvenirs. Likewise, you can take a rest while enjoying the various foods typically North Maluku Province such as Papeda Ternate, ketam kenari, halua kenari, bagea, and sea foods.
