North Maluku Tourism: Papeda Ternate (Sago Porridge)

A. Brief Information
The existence of sago palm tree (Metroxhylon rumpii) amongst the Ternate people is a significant matter. Sago palm which has reached 10 years old is used as the ingredient for making Papeda (sago porridge) since 10-year sago palm tree can produce sago flour about 80 to 100 kilograms.
Papeda is better dished with yellow soup made of turmeric combined with tuna fish. For more delicious taste, you may add lemon, coconut, and sago. It will be delicious for those who rarely find such food outside of Ternate, North Maluku Province.
Slice the base point of Sago palm tree and take the essence from it. Boil the Sago flour in the water and let it coagulates. In warm, papeda is ready to be served in a plate which has been filled in with fish soup so that papeda will not adhere in the plate.
B. Distinctive Features
It is better for you to taste papeda porridge in warm. When it has been cold, it will adhere to the plate. Therefore, we suggest you to taste papeda in warm. Do not use spoon to try papeda, you would better take a sip papeda directly from the plate.
C. Location
Along the roads in Ternate City, North Maluku Province, you can easily find the number of food tents and stalls offering papeda porridge in cheap price.
D. Access
You can see the central of papeda porridge if you are in the heart of Ternate City. Therefore, for you who want to taste this delicious food, you can reach Terante city by taking any public transport from sultan Baabullah airport for about IDR 3.000 in cost (per March 2008).
E. Price
The price for tasting papeda food is around IDR 1.000 to IDR 1.500 per portion (per March 2008).
F. Accommodation and other Facilities
You can find some hotels around Ternate City if you want to stay longer there for visiting other tourism destinations in North Maluku Province. Moreover, some souvenir shops are available there as well.
