Maluku Tourism: Amsterdam Fortress of Ambon City

A. Brief Information

Following the establishment of Vereenigde Oost Indische Compagnie (VOC) by the Dutch colonial government in the 17th century, Amsterdam Fortress was built in the city of Ambon, Maluku Province, as the branch of VOC in the eastern Indonesia. The fortress stands nearby the Hila Old Church, and is the second Dutch fortress (another Dutch fortress is known as Kasteel van Verre) in the Land of Maluku. In addition, the fortress was once revamped in 1993 A.D.

It is said that George Everhard Rumphius, a German historian and natural scientist, had ever been settling down in the fortress during 1660 to 1670 A.D. During his occupation in Ambon, Rumphius wrote many books about the diversity of flora and fauna in Ambon.
